Curt Weller named Jefferson Science Fellow
The Jefferson Science Fellows program is bringing 13 experienced, tenured research-active scientists and engineers from the American academic community into the U.S. Department of State for one year. The role of the Jefferson Science Fellows is both to advise and educate. They use their professional experience to increase the understanding among policy officials of complex, cutting edge scientific issues and their possible impacts on U.S. foreign policy and international relations.
The research projects of Professor Weller have been related to recovery of valuable lipid materials from grain sorghum process streams, control of microbial growth on meat and meat products during chilling, wet milling of maize and grain sorghum, gasification of biomass by-products and ultrasound-assisted osmotic dehydration of fruits. Given his interest in cereal grain research and utilization, his industry experience and his familiarity with food and bioproducts, Professor Weller has a solid fundamental base to address food and water security issues. He will live and work in Washington, D.C., for one year, beginning August 15, 2011.
Successful candidates are selected on the basis of their scientific achievements, articulation and communication skills, and their interest in science policy issues.
