Alumni Early Career Excellence Award Description and Procedures for Selection

I. Eligible recipients:
The Early-Career Excellence Award shall be for alumni, undergraduate or graduate, of the University of Nebraska’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering (BSE), including interdepartmental degrees affiliated with BSE, who have excelled and provided valuable leadership in their profession. Candidate should have less than 10 years of professional working experience, exclusive of graduate/professional school. Un-awarded candidates will remain in the selection pool for 3 years or until their eligibility expires. Past awardees are not eligible.
II. Selection Committee:
The BSE external relations committee, appointed by the Department Head on an annual basis will solicit nominations and select a preferred candidate to be voted on by the BSE faculty. The committee shall be knowledgeable about the tripartite mission of the department and the diversity of academic programs.
III. Selection Requirements and Timeline:
The external relations committee shall solicit and identify nominees during the spring semester of each year. Self-nominations are welcomed. Nominations should include a letter describing the outstanding contributions of the candidate to advance their field or profession, along with a current curriculum vitae not to exceed five pages. The external relations committee shall meet in the late spring or early summer to evaluate nominees and make a recommendation to the BSE faculty to be approved by said faculty. The number of awardees will be determined by the Department Head. A recognition date shall be specified by the Department, preferably in the late fall.
IV. Type of Recognition:
The BSE department will organize a celebration event on campus to recognize the recipient(s) of the Early-Career Excellence award. The recipient(s) will also engage with graduate and undergraduate students in the department, as a part of this event. The recipient(s) will be recognized with a plaque or certificate and publicized in Chase Hall and through a press release.
