CLIMATE-RESILIENT WATER INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN IN A NON-STATIONARY WORLD

Climate change has triggered the addition of non-stationary features into hydroclimatic datasets, altering extreme hydrometeorological and climate events' severity, frequency, and intensity. Water infrastructure has been traditionally designed under a stationary climate assumption, which has become invalid and led to underestimating failure risks in a changing environment. The increasing failure risks for water infrastructure can bring losses to society, economy and theenvironment. In order to safeguard our hydraulic infrastructure, the traditional design practices should be revisited. However, our contemporary understanding of the impacts of changing climate on critical infrastructures still needs to be improved. Hence, knowledge of climate change's effects on water infrastructure is needed to increase preparedness, decrease risk, and enhance disaster resilience. Accordingly, the hydrologic design tools like intensity-duration-frequency (IDF), flood frequency (FF), temperature- duration- frequency (TDF), drought severity-duration-frequency (SDF), and flow duration curves or hazard maps need updates, accounting for and introducing non-stationarity features.

This Special Issue on 'Climate-Resilient Water Infrastructure Design in Non-Stationarity World' aims to generate a compendium of knowledge through original research articles and reviews that could trigger the advancement of science and innovation for water infrastructure management in our changing world.

REMOTE SENSING IN PRECISION AGRICULTURE

Transforming Scientific Advancement intoInnovation

Remote sensing technology is playing an increasingly important role in the agriculture sector by providing timely spectral information which can be used to assess the biophysical indicators of plant health, to quantify crop yield, to map the soil quality, and to improve agro-ecological forecasts. This book project will compile the latest applications of Remote Sensing in agriculture using spaceborne, airborne and drones’ geospatial data.

About Francisco Muñoz-Arriola

I am an Associate Professor in Hydroinformatics and Integrated Hydroclimate in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering and the School of Natural Resources. My academic and professional experiences encompass diagnostics and sub-seasonal to seasonal prognostics of extreme hydrometeorological and climate events, and their effects on infrastructure (i.e., water resources, agriculture, and ecosystem services).

In the natural and built environment, for example, water quality and quantity are components of a complex system regulated or exacerbated by extreme hydrometeorological and climate events (EHCEs), fluctuating markets, technological developments, social behaviors, and evolving policies and decision making. Thus, the (re)design and management of resilient water infrastructure in a non-stationary world demands a better understanding of the underlying principles that enable water to maintain their core functions across geospatial attributions and management scales.
