This summer, the Department of Biological Systems Engineering welcomed two senior students from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, Caroline Babirye and Daniel Aluma, to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Their visit is part of a growing partnership between the two universities, focused on hands-on learning, collaborative research, and shared solutions to global challenges.
During their time at Nebraska, Caroline and Daniel worked closely with BSE faculty, staff, and students in both laboratory and field settings. Their experiences included time at the West Central Research and Extension Center in North Platte, contributing to projects in Dr. Nicole Iverson’s biomedical lab, and exploring oil extraction processes in Loren Isom’s lab.
Outside of the labs, they immersed themselves in Nebraska culture. They visited the UNL State Museum at Morrill Hall, toured the State Capitol, and experienced the Lancaster County Super Fair. They also connected with leaders and community members, including the Ambassador of Uganda, Robie Kakonge, and the Ugandan Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Monica Musenero.
Looking ahead, Caroline and Daniel will continue strengthening the partnership between Makerere and UNL by collaborating with Nebraska students on joint capstone projects. These projects will tackle real-world challenges faced in Ugandan communities, furthering the mission of engineering solutions with global impact.
