Dr. Derek Heeren, professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Excellence in Education Award. Presented by the Irrigation Association, this award recognizes outstanding educators who have made significant contributions to the fields of irrigation, water management, and water conservation.
Heeren’s impact on irrigation education is wide-ranging. He has developed innovative curriculum and authored educational materials, including serving as general editor of Irrigation Systems Management. He also created the Irrigation Educator GPT, an AI-powered tool designed to support learner engagement and professional development.
At UNL, Heeren has expanded educational opportunities through new graduate and undergraduate pathways, including a fully online certificate program that broadens access to irrigation education. He has mentored more than 20 undergraduate and 20 graduate students, and continues to shape academic programs as the department’s associate head for academic programs and as education coordinator for the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute.
His long-standing service to the Irrigation Association and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers reflects his dedication to advancing the profession and preparing the next generation of leaders in water and resource management.
