Supported by a University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Grand Challenges Initiative planning grant, faculty from UNL Biological Systems Engineering are organizing the Ag4Space Symposium, to be held on November 30 and December 1, 2023, at the Nebraska East Union.
The symposium brings together invited speakers from government, academia, and industry to explore how agriculture and food-production systems can support long-duration space missions, permanent outposts on the Moon and Mars, and deep-space exploration. At the same time, the event highlights how space agriculture research can help address future extreme climates on Earth through resilient, agriculture-based solutions.
Discussions will span a wide range of topics, including resource-limited food production, astro-plant biology, in-situ resource utilization, and emerging technologies for controlled and automated agricultural systems. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, the Ag4Space Symposium aims to shape future research directions and partnerships at the intersection of agriculture, engineering, and space exploration.
The event reflects UNL’s commitment to advancing innovative solutions that connect space exploration with sustainable food systems on Earth.
