Timo Becker, a staff member in the Agricultural Technology Department at The Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, commonly referred to as the Thünen Institute, in Braunschweig, Germany, concluded a 6-week work trip to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) on February 23rd, 2024.

During his stay in Lincoln, Nebraska, Becker collaborated with Tami Brown-Brandl, Professor of Biological Systems Engineering, and Dr. William E. and Eleanor L. Splinter, Chair, who oversaw his trip. Becker's primary goal was to enhance his skills in various agricultural technologies, facilitate knowledge transfer, and foster collaboration between The Thünen Institute and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A notable aspect of Becker's visit was exploring the Splinter Laboratories, recognized for their work in precision animal management using technologies like RFID transponders. "Observing the processes and ongoing research to improve animal management at UNL has been truly beneficial. I intend to apply this knowledge to enhance our capabilities in similar projects at the Thünen Institute," stated Becker.

An essential aspect of Becker's visit was establishing an ongoing collaboration between the Thünen Institute and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Brown-Brandl provided insights into various projects where both institutes share similar interests. Notably, she highlighted the DigiPig project at the Thünen Institute, emphasizing its alignment with the research goals of the swine management system designed and developed at the Splinter Laboratories at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Furthermore, Dr. Brown-Brandl collaborates closely with faculty from Animal Science and Food Engineering at the University of São Paulo in research focused on innovative solutions for improving the management of finishing pigs. Becker's visit to UNL is part of the ongoing effort to enhance collaboration among the research teams from the three institutes. Dr. Brown-Brandl is actively working to create future collaborations in research and student exchange programs among the institutes.
